A trip to Jizerka

A trip to Jizerka

This picturesque settlement lying near to Harrachov attracts visitors all year round.

The Jizerka settlement (part of the municipality of Kořenov) lying at an altitude of 862 m is the highest located settlement in the Jizera Mountains. From Harrachov, it is easiest get there by walking or cycling along the red-marked hiking trail which is about 15 km long and leads through Mýtiny, the Neděje Valley and then up the Jizera River (the trail also passes under the monumental Jizera railway bridge). The settlement is home to a number of points of interest. These include, for example, the Museum of the Jizera Mountains in the former school building, the Pyramid (a former glass cutting plant converted into the settlement’s first restaurant) or the so-called Manure House of the German traveller and adventurer, Gustav Ginzel. The peak of Bukovec (1005 m), one of the highest located basalt effusions in Europe, towers above the settlement like a lighthouse. The state protected Jizera and Jizerka Peat Bogs have a magical atmosphere. Nowadays, almost every chalet in this mountain settlement houses a restaurant, so visitors there need no fear that they will go hungry of thirsty.

It is possible to walk or bike back to Harrachov from Jizerka via Poland via the no less placid settlement of Orle where the famous local restaurant also accepts Czech crowns as payment. Those who prefer to travel by car can get to Jizerka from Harrachov via Horní Polubný along a nice, albeit in places narrow, road. However, it is necessary to park the vehicle just in front of the settlement, into which it is only possible to drive with a permit.
